An indigenous Information and Communication Technology firm, Kits Technologies, has said inadequate knowledge and poor management will jeopardise data centre investments in Nigeria.

The Director, Business and Strategy, Kits Technologies, Taofeek Okoya, said there was a huge knowledge gap in the country relating to data centre design, implementation and operations. Speaking during an interactive session with the media in Lagos, Okoya said poor data centre management was a major challenge that requires urgent attention.

He said, “One of the major challenges facing data centre management in Nigeria is downtime. We have noticed that some old data centres were built without adequate design in mind. “We also noticed that most old data centres are not in line with modern technology.” In view of this, Okoya said Kits was focussing on helping companies that had invested or planning to invest in data centres to bridge knowledge gap.

He said Kits had concluded plans to train data centre managers and other stakeholders in the country with the aim of keeping them abreast of latest developments in data centre management.

Okoya said the focus of the training was to help companies achieve efficient data centre management, zero downtime and efficiency, while avoiding costly mistakes that were becoming common in Nigeria. The General Manager, Sales and Marketing, Kits Technologies, Kazeem Keshinro, reiterated that it was imperative for companies investing in data centres to train their employees in order to boost their return on investment. According to Keshinro, data centres will change the way businesses are done in the country, adding that this was in concurrence with global paradigm shift, as major global brands are moving their data into the cloud.

He explained that this was why it had become imperative for Nigerian data centre investors to understand the data centre design, implementation and operation. According to him, Kits Technologies possesses a 10-year infrastructure management, connectivity, communication and security experience.

The Deputy Manager, Sales, Kits Technologies, Nnamani Kanayo, said the potency of data management was key to the survival of businesses these days and as such, the company would equip managers with requisite knowledge and know-how to run efficient data centres.

He said the company would be organising a free training for all data centre stakeholders’ forum on November 12 and 13, 2012. The Customer Relationship Manager, Kits Technologies, Queen Adaji, lamented that many data centre managers were just administrators and not real managers because they lacked the requisite knowledge.

She insisted that the proposed training would address this lacuna. According to her, Kits Technologies is a certified data centre design and engineering specialist in West Africa. Adaji said the company was already enjoying very strong technical partnership with a United Kingdom data centre specialist known as Capitoline.
